George Medal for act of bravery in Afghanistan

WO1 Andy Peat, a high threat explosive ordnance disposal operator, received the George Medal for his role when he was attached to a task force of a Danish Special Forces unit with Afghan partners.

He was credited with saving the lives of several other Danish soldiers and members of the Afghan police. He cleared a route to the injured man while urging the other Afghan and Danish soldiers to stay still to avoid triggering other bombs.

When he reached him he realised there was another wire underneath him - tracing it to another IED hidden under a nearby stone, he disarmed it and cleared a safe route.

Queen's Gallantry Medal for courageous bomb disposal soldier

Queen's Gallantry Medal for courageous bomb disposal soldier

Sergeant David Acarnley, 31, a bomb disposal officer with 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Regiment The Royal Logistic Corps , was called to the aid of a Danish armoured vehicle on 1 June last year after it hit an improvised explosive device (IED).

A secondary device had been located at the back door of the vehicle, trapping the crew inside. Sergeant Acarnley’s job was to make it safe so the soldiers could escape.

But as he worked another soldier triggered a 3rd IED, immediately becoming a priority casualty.

Without hesitation, Sergeant Acarnley switched tasks to clear a safe route across the deadly ground so medics could reach him and give life-saving first aid. He then returned to his original task to rescue the stricken crew.

EOD Memorial and Roll of Honour

The EOD Memorial

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Memorial is located at the entrance to Marlborough Barracks, Warwickshire and consists of a stone figure of an Ammunition Technician in a walled garden. It was erected in 1991 to commemorate all those Ammunition Technicians and Ammunition Technical Officers who have given their lives since 1956 in the conduct of their duties dealing with ammunition and explosives.

The names of the Ammunition Technicians of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps and more recently the Royal Logistic Corps who have given their lives in the conduct of their duties since 1956 are engraved on polished green slate plaques fixed to the inner walls.

The EOD Memorial was dedicated on Sunday 23 June 1991 during a service conducted by the Chaplain General, the Reverend James Harkness.

Bluestone 42

A new eight-part comedy drama for BBC Three

Bluestone 42 is an eight-part comedy drama about a British bomb disposal detachment in Afghanistan. It is a series about a bunch of soldiers who love being soldiers, and the camaraderie, bonds and banter they share, even though they are risking their lives defusing hidden bombs.

Written by Richard Hurst (Secret Diary Of A Call Girl) and James Cary (Miranda) in their first original commission, the series has been carefully researched and informed by serving and former members of the armed forces and military experts, to take the audience through authentic, compelling, surprising and funny stories about how heroes pass their time in between saving lives.

The Injured

Many assume, wrongly, that 'casualty' means 'fatality'. In fact it means 'killed and injured' and typically there are twice or three times as many injured as killed.

Many of those injuries carry with them lifelong physical disabilities or mental scars, burdens which have to be borne as much by their families and friends as by the injured men or women themselves. A battle injury does not always end a life, but it very often ends a normal life and begins a lifelong need for special care.

There are many important charities whose efforts are dedicated to helping those who are either injured or who care for the injured. You may choose to support one of them.
